Cubs – I Don’t Know What Happened
I watched the game and still can’t believe what I saw. We were up 7-2 going into the 9th inning and Marmol completely feel apart. I mean he just looked terrible; even after the pitch was tossed and hit he was running around like a chicken with it’s head cut off. What a mess, that half inning was the worst I’ve seen all year. In fact I’m typing and I just realized that I haven’t even mentioned Harden’s name.
Harden was everything we expected and the sad part is he pitched well enough to get a win and all he got was a no decision. Harden left the game up 7-0 and the bullpen (Marmol) just blew it.
But, no matter how ugly it got we won and that was big because tomorrow we face Lincecum. We have Dempster and he’s been pitching well, so let’s see what happens.

Cubs Marquis Is Remarkable In Win
Jason Marquis goes seven innings giving up only three hits,
two walks and tallying four strikeouts and was actually out pitched by Cain. Cain went seven innings giving up the same
three hits but walked three and struck out nine. This was arguably Jason’s best outing but earned
him a no decision since he left in the seventh with a 0-0 score.
Howry pitched the top of the eighth and in the bottom Aramis
came up with two on. After an intentional walk to Lee, Aramis blasted his
seventeenth home run. The home run had
no doubt about it distance but appeared to be slicing foul. Once the arms of the left field bleacher bums
went up it was 3-0. But even with the
three run lead, Wood would make it interesting in the top of the ninth.
The Giants would get one run in the top of the ninth and
eventually have men on second and third before Wood got Rich Aurilla to ground out to
first to end the game.
Player of the game would have to be Aramis Ramirez for
breaking the 0-0 tie in the bottom of the eight.

Cubs Settle For Spilt In San Fran – Marmol Struggles
I didn’t see any of yesterday’ game but did enjoy the fact that we pulled out a late inning win. Today’s game I watched from the seventh inning and was not impressed, but I have to admit I was hoping for a split against the Giants and we did get it.
The big concern has to be the struggles of Carlos Marmol. He has gone from not being able to find the strike zone in Tampa Bay to getting hit with the long ball in San Fran. This was an area where the Cubs were strong earlier this year and if the old Marmol could have gotten us to the ninth without giving up a run, this game changes completely. That’s why we find ourselves with a two fold problem; how do we get the old Carlos Marmol back and, who is taking on the set-up role while we are waiting for the metamorphosis to take place?
Well that’s why we have Piniella.
Cubs Too Little Too Late
I predicted this game would be a hit-fest. I’m
laughing right now. Both Cain and Marquis had shaky starts, both found their
rhythm. The Giants capitalized early with timely hitting and heads up base
running. Again we couldn’t string the hits together and in the end left
it up to Theriot who actually didn’t start because of the stomach flu. He
battled taking the count to two and two, fouled three off and took a big cut
and missed for the final out. Marquis
gets the loss and it’s definitely a tough one to take.
I had a conversation with a buddy of mine this afternoon and I told him of my
feelings that we were going to knock Cain around.
He said, “I would be worried about Cain if I were you.”
I retorted with a, “Well I’m not worried, and you’re not me.”
I think I got a plate of crow waiting for me tomorrow.
Speaking of tomorrow, we put Dempster out there after he got rocked in his last
outing at Cellular against the Sox. Let’s hope he is ready to show us
that was just a fluke because although Correia, the Giants starter, is sporting
a 4.79 ERA, he is coming off two good outings, both of which were on the road.
Another pitching duel ahead of us.
Cubs DeRosa Steps Up To The Plate Big Time
You
could almost hear Mark DeRosa saying, “jump on my back guys I got this one
today!” Boy did he ever! After Fukodmoe knocks in Edmonds in the second
and Matt Murton hits a two run double in the third (later in the eighth he hit
another double that would have been gone at Wrigley), it turned into the Mark
DeRosa show. Mark hits a two run home run in the fifth that all but put
this game out of reach the way Lilly was pitching. But guess what, DeRosa
wasn’t done, after the bags are loaded with three consecutive walks, DeRosa
steps up to the plate and puts an exclamation mark (pun intended) on his
day at work with a grand slam. This was the first time a Cub hit two home runs
(one being a grand slam) in San Francisco since Ron Santo did it in 1963.
Did we need this one – just what the doctor ordered – us putting crooked
numbers all over the board and them putting only two at the end of the game.

Now that I’ve sung the due accolades
about DeRosa, how about the night Lilly had. I know the Giants haven’t
been knocking the cover off the ball but to go into someone else’s park and
shut them out through eight is something we just haven’t seen too often this
year. He wasn’t able to finish the game, leaving in the ninth with two on and
no outs. The last lefty to go the distance in San Francisco was Ken
Holtzman in 1970.
Wood came in relief, got the first batter, the second knocked Lilly’s runners
in, the third walked, the fourth K, then with a loud chant of “Let’s Go
Cubbies” from what was left of the crowd the fifth flew out to
Edmond’s in center. Not one of his best outings but after five days rest
there was a little rust to knock off.
O.K. I pretty much pegged this one, tomorrow with Marquis vs. Cain, it could
turn into a hit-fest.
Let’s make sure our hits bring in one more run.
