Cubs Lose Four In A Row

Buehrle was spot on, he didn’t go eight but he did look great going seven.  I hate when I’m right.  Well actually I wasn’t completely right.  Marshall looked pretty good today.  But even with his pretty good, Thome’s bomb in the eighth with a man on and Buehrle’s recently typical outing with the Sox’s unbelievable bullpen, there was no way the Cubs were going to pull this one out.  End result, Cubs go down four in a row for the first time all season and lose eight of their last twelve.

To say we miss Soriano, Zambrano and Johnson would be a gross understatement. With that said and looking at the schedule I think it’s a must that we go seven and six over the next four series before the All-Star break.  The way I see it we need to split the series in San Francisco, take at least one from the Cardinals in St. Louis, then take two of three in the next two home series’ against the Reds and Giants respectively. If we can do this we will have gone through a mini-slump (which even the best teams have to go through) of eleven and fourteen in our last twenty-five and still gone into All-Star break with a 56-39 record.  Of course depending on what the Cards and Brewers do we should be two to three games up. So, more than half the season done, our two big boys back and we’ll be prime to make a run for the playoffs.

First things first, we head to San Francisco; we got Lilly who has been looking good of late and they got Zito who got roughed up his last time out.  Let’s turn this thing around.

It hasn’t been a 100 years for nothing, this winning a World Series thing is hard work.

Cubs Fall Short in Game 2 at Cellular

What can you say, sometimes you just get out played.  It was a great game I just didn’t like the outcome.  In fact I felt pretty good watching the game.  Other than the first inning Gallagher looked pretty good, and as far as Lee and Ramirez getting the bats going, it looks like Lee was listening.  Lee went five for five and just missed a game tying home run in the ninth by about four feet.  The problem today was timely hitting.  We had twelve hits, 3 walks and only scored five runs.

Now to compound our little problem we go into tomorrow with a three game losing streak under our belt and Sean Marshall starting, and if you’ve read my prior blog you know that I’m not big on Marshall. The Sox have Buehrle starting and he has not given up more than two earned runs in any of his last four starts.  In fact he only gave up two earned runs in one of those starts and only one in each of the other three.  Another note; he went eight innings in all of the four starts.  So we have to somehow find a way to get enough runs off Buerhle and the best bullpen in baseball in order to overcome the runs the Sox will get of one of the worst starters in baseball.

It’s going to be tough to avoid the first four game losing streak of the year.  Come on All Star break…we could use the rest.

Dempster Gets ROCKED against Sox

Didn’t we just see this movie? The other team get a zillion hits and runs while we hit a few solo home runs and can’t seem to string a few hits together. Wow, if I felt like I got tagged after the Orioles series the game yesterday put me right on my backside.  With that said how do you fault a pitcher that was pitching 2.41 away from home (grant it this still earned him two losses) and 2.74 at home and has a bad terrible outing?  You don’t, you lick your wounds and try to come out the next day with a fire in your belly.

The problem is there are quite a few wounds to lick; Patterson is starting to come down to earth after a great home series against the Sox, Edmonds looks like the walking wounded, even with his two hits Fukodome’s status concerns me, we got the kid on the mound today who, on the road, on grass in the day has an ERA around 5.00 and Lee and Ramirez need to find their bats again.  Plus Soriano and Zambrano are still on the D.L..

Well let’s get the bandages out and see what happens.

Cubs vs Sox Round One – Cubs First Test – Grade A+

Looking at the beginning of this season there have not been a lot of tests to date.  The truth is the Cubs have faced many weaker teams and the schedule has been favorable based on home games.  With that said the first real test of the season has come and gone and the grade….A+.

Yes, the Chicago White Sox shuttled up north for a three game series to face our beloved Cubbies. Even with the eleven game home winning streak in our back pocket and the Sox sporting a six game away losing streak of their own, the table was set for a big test.

We had just been on a short world win  trip to Canada,  Copperstown for a bus ride and a day of aggravation and then to Florida where we experienced our first three game losing streak and  losing sweep of the season.  Then to add insult to injury, the mental midgets that set up the schedule, had us playing a night game on get-away-day while the first game of our series with the Sox was a day game back in Chicago.  Now throw in the fact that we were about to face a starting pitching staff that was leading the Major League in ERA, a bullpen with an ERA around 2.51 and we were cold with the bats.  I’d say this was test one.

Well if this test was the SAT’s the Cubs would be going to Harvard.  Although we did just pull out the first game, you gotta love the dramatic walk off home run by Ramirez. Games two and three were just hit-fests. Edmonds (I think he is officially a Cub), with two long balls in one inning, Ramirez with four homers for the series, and even Eric Patterson parked his first home run of his career.  The pitching was  great, except for the  Marmol  concerns  which might just be a situation of too little playing time.  Let’s hope we can work that kink out during the series with the Orioles  because after that  the next test is here as we head down south to battle the White Sox on their own turf.

You gotta love this game!
