Cubs Marquis Is Remarkable In Win

Jason Marquis goes seven innings giving up only three hits,
two walks and tallying four strikeouts and was actually out pitched by Cain.  Cain went seven innings giving up the same
three hits but walked three and struck out nine.  This was arguably Jason’s best outing but earned
him a no decision since he left in the seventh with a 0-0 score.

Howry pitched the top of the eighth and in the bottom Aramis
came up with two on. After an intentional walk to Lee, Aramis blasted his
seventeenth home run.  The home run had
no doubt about it distance but appeared to be slicing foul.  Once the arms of the left field bleacher bums
went up it was 3-0.  But even with the
three run lead, Wood would make it interesting in the top of the ninth.

The Giants would get one run in the top of the ninth and
eventually have men on second and third before Wood got Rich Aurilla to ground out to
first to end the game.

Player of the game would have to be Aramis Ramirez for
breaking the 0-0 tie in the bottom of the eight.

Cubs Too Little Too Late

I predicted this game would be a hit-fest.  I’m
laughing right now. Both Cain and Marquis had shaky starts, both found their
rhythm. The Giants capitalized early with timely hitting and heads up base
running.  Again we couldn’t string the hits together and in the end left
it up to Theriot who actually didn’t start because of the stomach flu.  He
battled taking the count to two and two, fouled three off and took a big cut
and missed for the final out.  Marquis
gets the loss and it’s definitely a tough one to take.

I had a conversation with a buddy of mine this afternoon and I told him of my
feelings that we were going to knock Cain around.

He said, “I would be worried about Cain if I were you.”

I retorted with a, “Well I’m not worried, and you’re not me.”

I think I got a plate of crow waiting for me tomorrow.

Speaking of tomorrow, we put Dempster out there after he got rocked in his last
outing at Cellular against the Sox.  Let’s hope he is ready to show us
that was just a fluke because although Correia, the Giants starter, is sporting
a 4.79 ERA, he is coming off two good outings, both of which were on the road.

Another pitching duel ahead of us.

Cubs Take It On The Chin Against Orioles

Look at my nose…am I bleeding?  Because I just got tagged.  Two days after singing the Cubs praises and throwing A+’s around, the Cubs lose two out of three to the Baltimore Orioles at home! It wasn’t like the Cubs lost a couple of close games, in the two loses they were out scored 18-9.  In the last game by the middle of the sixth it was turning into a good old fashion #&! whipping.  The Cubs did score three in the bottom of sixth and one more in the eighth to make it just a normal #&! whipping, but this series did expose the one weakness of this Cubs team…starting pitching.

In game one Marshall goes 4.2 innings and gives up four runs.  I guess the good news is his control was good, he stuck out seven and only walked one, but he gave up seven hits.  Definitely not what you would call a good outing.

In game two Lilly looked good giving up four runs in seven innings, but the problem again is the long ball.  Payton takes him yard twice with a man on both times.   Seeing Marmol pitch an inning with 2k’s, no walks and only one hit was nice, and Wood…a definite bright spot.

The truth is Marshall doesn’t belong in any teams starting rotation, Lilly is a solid pitcher but I would say a number four.  My big concern is game three’s starter, Marquis.  Seven hits, seven runs in four innings and he looked bad doing it.  With Rich Hill as a bust this year the Cubs need Marquis to step up and win 15 plus games. It’s possible but when I see him pitch like he did against the Orioles it reminds me that there are two Jason Marquis; the one that can win five games in a row and the one that started the season 1-3.

That’s the bad, the good, maybe Marmol’s control returning to form.  In any event the second big test of the season starts tomorrow on the south side and Dempster is starting and he has been lights out.  The Cubs went to Florida got swept then came home and swept the Sox, Cubs then lost two out of three at home, maybe they will go to Comiskey Cellular One and take two out of three.

Hey, Next Century Is Here, go get it done Cubs!
