Cub’s Marshall Earns Two Out Of Three From Cards

My this crow taste good.  I’ve been eating a lot of crow lately, but when it means the Cubs win then pull those feathers off and get that crow a cookin’.  Yes, on the back of Sean Marshall (the guy I said wasn’t fit to start on any team), the Cubs win the finale against the Cards seven to one. I guess we caught them feeling their oats and sleeping after yesterdays big walk-off win!

After the heartbreaking loss yesterday the Cubs got right back on the horse and did what they had to do…take two out of three in the home of the Cards.  The Cubs nickeled and dimed the Cards with five innings of one run scoring and one inning with a crooked two spot.  All this while the combination of Marshall, Cotts, Marmol and Howry held the Cards to one run; a solo home run by Ludwick.

The solo home run came in the bottom of the sixth and made the score 3-1.  I’m not sure about anybody else but I started getting the “here we go again” feeling.  But the “Next Century” Cubs were not to be denied.  With a run in the 7th and 9th and two in the 8th, the Cubs took what could have been the third close game of the series and turned it into a rout.

This is the exact reason that I feel this is a team of destiny and that the “Next Century Is Here”.  This team is actually in a mini slump; they have loss some of their big boys and have played some tough teams during their absence, yet they have only gone from 4.5 games up to 3.5 games up during that period of time.  Each time adversity has struck this team has bounced back.  That’s what I like about this team and Lou Piniella; their never quit, never die attitude.

That great attitude has earned a well deserved day off tomorrow. Then on Tuesday we start a short home stretch with six games which will take us to the All-Star break.  The first game puts Marquis against Harang.  Let’s take these game one at a time and finish at the break on a high note.

Go Next Century Is Here Cubs!

Cubs Lose Four In A Row

Buehrle was spot on, he didn’t go eight but he did look great going seven.  I hate when I’m right.  Well actually I wasn’t completely right.  Marshall looked pretty good today.  But even with his pretty good, Thome’s bomb in the eighth with a man on and Buehrle’s recently typical outing with the Sox’s unbelievable bullpen, there was no way the Cubs were going to pull this one out.  End result, Cubs go down four in a row for the first time all season and lose eight of their last twelve.

To say we miss Soriano, Zambrano and Johnson would be a gross understatement. With that said and looking at the schedule I think it’s a must that we go seven and six over the next four series before the All-Star break.  The way I see it we need to split the series in San Francisco, take at least one from the Cardinals in St. Louis, then take two of three in the next two home series’ against the Reds and Giants respectively. If we can do this we will have gone through a mini-slump (which even the best teams have to go through) of eleven and fourteen in our last twenty-five and still gone into All-Star break with a 56-39 record.  Of course depending on what the Cards and Brewers do we should be two to three games up. So, more than half the season done, our two big boys back and we’ll be prime to make a run for the playoffs.

First things first, we head to San Francisco; we got Lilly who has been looking good of late and they got Zito who got roughed up his last time out.  Let’s turn this thing around.

It hasn’t been a 100 years for nothing, this winning a World Series thing is hard work.

Cubs Fall Short in Game 2 at Cellular

What can you say, sometimes you just get out played.  It was a great game I just didn’t like the outcome.  In fact I felt pretty good watching the game.  Other than the first inning Gallagher looked pretty good, and as far as Lee and Ramirez getting the bats going, it looks like Lee was listening.  Lee went five for five and just missed a game tying home run in the ninth by about four feet.  The problem today was timely hitting.  We had twelve hits, 3 walks and only scored five runs.

Now to compound our little problem we go into tomorrow with a three game losing streak under our belt and Sean Marshall starting, and if you’ve read my prior blog you know that I’m not big on Marshall. The Sox have Buehrle starting and he has not given up more than two earned runs in any of his last four starts.  In fact he only gave up two earned runs in one of those starts and only one in each of the other three.  Another note; he went eight innings in all of the four starts.  So we have to somehow find a way to get enough runs off Buerhle and the best bullpen in baseball in order to overcome the runs the Sox will get of one of the worst starters in baseball.

It’s going to be tough to avoid the first four game losing streak of the year.  Come on All Star break…we could use the rest.
